Friday 15 December 2023: Metincan Güzel’s Final Performance

On 15 December, Metincan Güzel will present a series of installations based on research in the local area. To accompany the installations, Okan Urun has written and will direct a script inspired by interviews he conducted with local entrepreneurs. Will you be there?

Too Close to Home

For his project Too Close to Home, artist Metincan Güzel has researched shop interiors in Rotterdam-Zuid, many of whose owners have migrated from Turkey to the Netherlands. Metincan views these interiors as a representation of the Turkish diaspora. Certain elements in the spaces create a magical environment that transports us to another time and place.

The project aims to reveal conscious and unconscious knowledge of the Turkish diaspora by simulating imaginary spaces. Metincan emphasises the similar theatricality with which the retailers have constructed their shop interiors to create stages that evoke both ‘here’ and ‘there’.

The performance and the installations tell the story of Metincan's experiences in the local area and present an image of the Turkish diaspora in Rotterdam.
